Influence of Fe(2+)-catalysed iron oxide recrystallization on metal cycling.

چکیده
Recent work has indicated that iron (oxyhydr-)oxides are capable of structurally incorporating and releasing metals and nutrients as a result of Fe2+-induced iron oxide recrystallization. In the present paper, we briefly review the current literature examining the mechanisms by which iron oxides recrystallize and summarize how recrystallization affects metal incorporation and release. We also provide new experimental evidence for the Fe2+-induced release of structural manganese from manganese-doped goethite. Currently, the exact mechanism(s) for Fe2+-induced recrystallization remain elusive, although they are likely to be both oxide-and metal-dependent. We conclude by discussing some future research directions for Fe2+-catalysed iron oxide recrystallization.

Effects of carbon during Fe(II)-catalyzed Fe oxide recrystallization: implications for Fe and carbon cycling
The reaction between aqueous Fe(II) and Fe(III) oxides is extremely complex, and can catalyze Fe(II)-Fe(III) electron transfer, exchange of Fe atoms between the aqueous and solid phases, mineral transformation, and contaminant reduction. Together, these processes represent a phenomenon referred to as Fe(II)-catalyzed Fe oxide recrystallization, which has been observed under controlled condition...
متن کاملTrace Metal Requirements for Microbial Enzymes Involved in the Production and Consumption of Methane and Nitrous Oxide
Fluxes of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere are heavily influenced by microbiological activity. Microbial enzymes involved in the production and consumption of greenhouse gases often contain metal cofactors. While extensive research has examined the influence of Fe bioavailability on microbial CO(2) cycling, fewer studies have explored metal requirements for microbial production and consumptio...
متن کاملThe association of cobalt with iron and manganese (oxyhydr)oxides in marine sediment
Formation and dissolution of authigenic Fe and Mn (oxyhydr)oxides influence cycling of trace metals in oxic/suboxic surface sediments. We used the diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) to estimate the association of cobalt with iron and manganese oxides. We compared Co, Fe and Mn maxima measured by DGT in the pore waters of fresh and aged marine sediment cores and estimated the Co/F...
متن کاملThe Influence of Doping with Transition Metal Ions on the Structure and Magnetic Properties of Zinc Oxide Thin Films
Zn1-x Ni x O (x = 0.03 ÷ 0.10) and Zn1-x Fe x O (x = 0.03 ÷ 0.15) thin films were synthesized by sol-gel method. The structure and the surface morphology of zinc oxide thin films doped with transition metal (TM) ions have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The magnetic studies were done using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature. E...
متن کاملSorption of Aqueous Fe(ii) on Goethite Investigated with Stable Oxygen Isotopes
This thesis work is aimed at examining the oxygen atom mixing between common iron(III) oxides and Fe(II)aq solution during the sorption process. First, O labeled iron(III) minerals were used in batch sorption reactors to study the exchange of oxygen atom within the Fe(II)aq – iron(III) oxide system. Results showed a much lesser extent of oxygen mixing than reported Fe mixing from previous studi...
